Fair Isle

[Fair Isle Lodge and Bird Observatory]

Fair Isle is Britain's most remote inhabited island.

Enjoy spectacular cliff and coastal scenery, wild flowers, thousands of seabirds and spring & autumn migrants. Join in with the Observatory's work of bird ringing and migrations studies, go on guided walks, see local crafts such as the famous Fair Isle knitting. Easily accessible by mailboat from Grutness Pier, near Sumburgh (passengers only) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays (2.5 hours) or by plane from Shetland. A unique holiday experience for the birder and non birder alike.

The Fair Isle Bird Observatory was rebuilt in 2009-10, re-opening in May 2010. The original building was demolished and a modern, eco-friendly one built on the same site.

Facilities available in the new Observatory include en-suite bedrooms, disabled access bedroom, large dual-aspect lounge and bar, interpretative room, sociable dual-aspect dining room, extensive natural history library, wi-fi e-mail and internet access, guest laundry room, boot/drying room, ringing demonstration room, gift and tuck shop.

The Fair Isle Bird Observatory offers comfortable single, double, twin and family accommodation. Most rooms are first-floor, spacious with en-suite toilet and shower. There are also bathrooms close by.

The dining room, with large windows offering fantastic views to Sheep Craig, is a very sociable place where guests and staff all converse and eat together at large tables, enjoying sumptuous helpings of delicious home-cooked meals with freshly-baked bread and home bakes. After your evening meal there is ample time, during the long summer days, for a relaxing walk to North Lighthouse with its breathtaking cliffs and views to Shetland Mainland and Foula. Or perhaps just to sit on Buness amid the Puffins for an hour or two.

All guests are invited at 9.30pm to join the bird staff for Bird Log whilst enjoying more home-bakes and cocoa before retiring to bed or staying at the bar awhile for some good banter.

Prices are per person, per night, full board, from £50 per person, per night. Bed Linen & Towels provided. Transport to/from Fair Isle is extra.
